Year 3 Spring Overview

In Year 3, our term will be filled with inspiring topics and hands-on activities across all our subjects! Here’s what we’ll be focusing on this term

English: When the Giant Stirred

This term, our Year 3 children will be diving into the exciting story When the Giant Stirred by Celia Godkin. Through this text, they will develop key literacy skills while exploring descriptive language, sentence structure, and persuasive writing.

Children will retell the story using key literacy techniques, including:
✨ Expanded noun phrases and similes to create vivid descriptions of characters and settings.
✨ Past tense consistency to develop clear and engaging storytelling.
✨ Conjunctions such as because, when, if, and but to extend sentences effectively.

As part of their learning, children will also write a persuasive piece, encouraging the villagers and the giant to find a peaceful resolution. This will help them develop their ability to express opinions, present arguments, and use persuasive language confidently.

Through these activities, children will strengthen their creative writing skills while building confidence in using new literacy devices. We can’t wait to see their fantastic work! 🌟✍️

History-  Ancient Egypt (3100 BC-550BC):

This term, our Year 3 pupils will journey back in time to explore the wonders of Ancient Egypt, one of the world’s earliest and most influential civilizations. They will learn about the incredible achievements of the Egyptians, from the construction of the majestic pyramids to the development of hieroglyphic writing.

Through exciting lessons, pupils will investigate the lives of pharaohs, explore daily life and social structures, and understand the importance of the Nile River, including its yearly floods. Using artefacts, ancient texts, and historical sources, they will compare life in Ancient Egypt with their own, discovering how this remarkable civilization has shaped the world we live in today.

We can't wait to see our young historians bring history to life! πŸΊπŸ“œβœ¨

Science - Light

This term, our Year 3 pupils will be investigating the fascinating topic of light. They will explore how light helps us see and understand that darkness is the absence of light. Through hands-on experiments, children will discover how light reflects off surfaces, how shadows are formed, and how their size changes depending on the position of the light source.

Additionally, pupils will learn the importance of protecting their eyes from the sun’s harmful rays and discuss ways to stay safe in bright light. This exciting topic will encourage curiosity, observation, and scientific thinking as children explore the wonders of light in their everyday lives! β˜€οΈπŸ‘€βœ¨

D.T. - Castle Creations

In D.T., we’re constructing 3D castle models, and the results have been fantastic! Some children have been so inspired that they’ve built their own models at home and proudly brought them in to share. This project has sparked creativity and teamwork, as students design and build their own fortresses.

Maths: Fraction, Mass and Capacity

This term, our Year 3 children will be developing their understanding of fractions, mass, and capacity through practical and engaging activities. In fractions, they will learn to recognise, compare, and find fractions of shapes and numbers, as well as add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. They will also explore equivalent fractions to deepen their understanding.

Alongside fractions, children will study mass and capacity, learning to measure, compare, and estimate weight and volume using standard units such as grams, kilograms, millilitres, and litres. They will take part in hands-on investigations to apply their knowledge to real-world situations, improving their problem-solving and reasoning skills. We look forward to seeing their confidence grow in these key areas of maths! πŸ”’βš–οΈπŸ₯›

PSHE: Friendship and Social Skills - Fresh Arts Bounce Project

As part of our Fresh Arts Bounce Project, we’ve been focusing on building strong friendships and understanding social situations. The children enjoyed making friendship bracelets as a way to show kindness and appreciation for one another. Alongside this, we’ve been interacting with our friend Freddie to work through various social scenarios, discussing how to handle different situations respectfully and empathetically. These activities help students develop important skills for resolving conflicts, supporting each other, and building positive relationships.
