Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back!  We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable Summer break!  Thank you for all of your support in settling your child back into school and ensuring that they have the correct uniform and equipment.

Our topic for the Autumn Term is ‘The Rotten Romans’.  We will be looking at how Romans lived, their language, religion and culture. We’re sure that the children will really enjoy this topic and will take their learning in all sorts of exciting directions!

The table below outlines how you can support your child at home across all areas of learning.

Subject How you can support your child at home
English Home learning tasks – building on skills that we have been learning in class.
Encourage children to write sentences using correct punctuation and grammar. Support children in reading over sentences to check any mistakes. Continue supporting children with their spellings and focus on the rules we are teaching in class (suffixes, prefixes, homophones etc).
Maths Support children to complete home learning tasks to build on skills we have been learning in class.
Continue encouraging children to learn all times table facts up to 12x and their related division facts. (Hit the Button is a game on www.topmarks.co.uk which is great at developing mental maths recall.)
This half term we will be teaching number and place value. Ask your child to say numbers they see in the environment (busses, receipts etc) Can they tell you what number is the tens, hundreds or thousands digit? What is 10, 100 and 1000 more or less than that number?
After the half term, we will be focussing on addition and subtraction. We will be looking at the formal written methods used to add and subtract leading on to applying these to real life contexts in a range of word problems.
Topic The Rotten Romans
Encourage your child to visit the local library to look for information about the Romans. Also, try these useful websites:
 http://www.primaryhomeworkhelp.co.uk/Romans.html
http://www.bbc.co.uk/education/topics/zwmpfg8
Visit the Roman Galleries at the British Museum to look at some Roman artefacts.
Science Our science topic for this half term is ‘electricity’. Look at electrical objects around the home and discuss what they do and how they work. Do any of them have switches? Do any of them make different sounds? How are they powered?
PE Please ensure that children bring a full, NAMED PE/swimming kit into school on P.E/swimming days.  Thank you.
This term we will be covering cricket and handball skills, and we hope to use the outdoor space as long as the weather is fine!
Home Learning

This will be sent home on a Friday to be returned the following Tuesday.  Please ensure that homework is completed to a high standard of presentation and is given in on time.  Thank you.

Reading

Please listen to your child read at least 5 times each week and record this on their home learning sheet.  Please discuss their reading with them and encourage them to answer questions about what they have read.

Please keep in touch with the year 4 team, to inform us of anything your child has done in their spare time e.g. dance shows, gymnastics awards, etc. We love to hear about our children’s hobbies and achievements outside of school!

Thank you again for your continued support. We look forward to an exciting and busy Autumn Term.
