Welcome to Year 3

Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents and carers,
Welcome back. We're sure you will be glad to hear that the children have settled quickly to the new term and are working very hard.
We would like to provide you with the details of what your child will be learning over the next half term.
Literacy: We will be looking at Clown by Quentin Blake. The story is about a toy that gets thrown away and finds a new home, having adventures along the way. It is a wordless picture book that provides a lot of opportunities for the children to develop their grammatical skills as they provide their own words for the story. We will also be teaching the children spelling rules and patterns as well as guided reading. Please remember that you should still be reading with your child every day, as this will help them become confident readers.
Numeracy: Children will continue to develop their mathematical skills in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. They will be applying these skills to solve real life problems with regards to money, time and measures. We will continue to revise and learn our times tables.
Topic: In our first topic we are looking at where the children’s families come from, finding these places in atlases, and writing reports. To support this, the children will be identifying continents and oceans, and developing their map skills.  We have also created self-portraits.  In our linked science work, children are learning about nutrition and the importance of a healthy, balanced diet.  We will follow this by studying human and animal skeletons.
Brief notes and important information:
  • P.E is on Mondays and Tuesdays for Cedar, and Tuesdays and Thursdays for Oak. Please make sure that your child comes to school with his/her P.E kit. This consists of a T-Shirt, shorts and trainers.
  • Swimming: This is on Monday. Your child will need a towel and swimming costume/trunks.
  • Book bags: Your child will need one in order to take a reading book home. They can be purchased at the school office.
  • Your child is expected to bring a daily snack to school to have during break time at 10.30 a.m. They are no longer provided with fruit in the juniors (please no sweets or crisps).
  • Water bottles: Ensure that your child has a water bottle labelled with his or her name. We will not be able to give every child a plastic cup.
  • Homework: Your child will be given homework every Wednesday. This needs to be returned by the following Monday. It is important that your child completes his/her homework on time as it is given to reinforce work carried out in the class.Spelling tests:
  • Spelling tests take place weekly.
  • Times tables tests: These will take place weekly
  • Classrooms open at 8:40 and parents are expected to leave by 8:50 when registration gins.
  • Please remember: you still need to read with your child every night. This will make a huge difference to your children’s confidence in, and enjoyment of, reading.
If you have any queries please feel free to come and talk to us,
Kind Regards,
Mr. Griffiths & Mrs Barkus
