Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome back!  We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable Summer break.  The children are settling in well and are already working hard! Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child arrives on time, that they are well equipped and ready to learn.

Our topic this half term is ‘On Safari’.  We will be exploring the Kenyan safari though the story Lila and the Secret of Rain.

The table below outlines how you can support your child at home across all areas of learning.

Subject How you can support your child at home
English In our reading, we are working on our story telling skills so ask your child about the main characters in the story and to sequence the main events in order. In our writing, we are looking adding interesting adjectives.
Maths This term we will be focussing on place value. This includes understanding the value of a two digit number. You can help your child by ordering numbers from smallest to largest.
Topic
(history, geography, science, computing, art, D&T)
Throughout our safari topic, we will explore the safari habitat and in Science we will look at the differences between things that are living, non-living and never lived. In Geography we will look more closely at Kenya, its climate and culture. We will link our topic together in Art by exploring different prints and materials used around the world. As we develop our ICT skills we look at our programming skills and continue to master our understanding of the keyboard. Please talk to your child about these topics.
PE Please ensure that children bring a full, NAMED PE/swimming kit into school on P.E/swimming days.  Thank you.

Home Learning

This will be sent home on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday.  Please ensure that homework is completed to a high standard of presentation and is given in on time.  Thank you.

Reading

Please listen to your child read at least 5 times each week and record this on their home learning sheet.  Please discuss their reading with them and encourage them to answer questions about their texts.

Maths
Please help your child to learn the Key Number Facts each half term. A copy of these will be given to your child every half term and they will be tested on these weekly, as well as on their times tables. Regular practise in short bursts works well!

Please keep in touch with the Year 2 Team, to inform us of anything your child has done out of school, e.g. dance shows, gymnastics awards, etc. We love to hear about our children’s hobbies and achievements outside of school!

Thank you again for your continued support. We look forward to an exciting and busy Autumn Term.
