Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

Welcome to Year One!  We hope that you had a restful and enjoyable Summer break.  The children are settling in well and are already working hard! Thank you for your support in ensuring that your child arrives on time, that they are well equipped and ready to learn.

Our topic this half term is ‘Marvellous Me’.  We will be learning all about each other.  This learning will include building our vocabulary for parts of the body and growing in confidence when working independently. We will explore our likes and dislikes as well as learning that it’s good to be unique!
In English we will continue to learn new phonics sounds to support our reading and spelling.  We will be writing in sentences which include capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.  We will also be focusing on the importance of saying our sentence before we write it.  In reading, we will focus on applying our known sounds and using these to decode unfamiliar words.  We will also work on improving our rapid reading of our tricky words.

In Mathematics we will be working with numbers up to 20. We will use counters, numicom and number lines to support our maths learning.  We will compare and order numbers using the vocabulary ‘more than’, less than’, least and fewer as well as finding one more and one less than a given number.  We will begin to look at simple patterns using colours, stamps and coins.

The table below outlines how you can support your child at home across all areas of learning.

Subject How you can support your child at home
English Practise phonics sounds using www.phonicsplay.co.uk.  This website is free.  You should go to phase 2 and phase 3.  Please help your child by listening to them read every day for at least 20 minutes.  Your child will also benefit from listening to you reading a story to him/her regularly.  We will be sending spelling home for your child to work on each week.

Maths Please help your child to count real life objects (pennies, acorns, pencils, marbles etc) and write down the total.  Play bingo and practise reading numbers.  Ask your child to work out 1 more and 1 less through fun activities, for example eating milky buttons.

Topic
(history, geography, science, computing, art, D&T)
Help your child to learn the parts of their bodies and describe what makes them individual e.g. ‘I have 2 blue eyes’, ‘My hair is brown and curly’. Talk to your child about their feelings and emotions and how our bodies respond when we experience different emotions, for example, goose bumps when we feel nervous, and red cheeks when we feel embarrassed.

PE Please ensure that your child has a NAMED PE/swimming kit in school. Thank you.

Home Learning

This will be sent home on a Friday to be returned the following Wednesday.  Please ensure that homework is completed to a high standard of presentation and is given in on time.  Thank you.

Please keep in touch with the Year 1 Team, to inform us of anything your child has done out of school, e.g. dance shows, gymnastics awards, etc. We love to hear about our children’s hobbies and achievements outside of school!

Thank you again for your continued support. We look forward to an exciting and busy Autumn Term.
